About "Varun Gandhi"

Varun Gandhi is th young and firebrand leader of BJP- recently embroiled in a hate- speech controversy in his Pilibhit constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Varun Gandhi was born to Sanjay Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi on March 13, 1980 in New Delhi.Sanjay Gandhi was considered to be Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi's political heir. Varun Gandhi was about 3 months old when Sanjay Gandhi died in a plane crash.

Tragedy struck once again when Varun Gandhi’s grandmother and Prime Minster at that time, Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Varun's mother Maneka Gandhi, apart from being a staunch opponent of the Congress, soon became known for her work against cruelty to animals.

Varun’s great-grandfather, Jawaharlal Nehru, was the first Prime Minister of India, and his great-great-grandfather Motilal Nehru played an important role during Indian struggle for independence.

Varun Gandhi studied at the Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh, India and later on joined University of London's London School of Economics for a correspondence course..Varund enrolled himself in School of Oriental and African Studies in London for his Masters which he did not finish.

On 22 March 2009, the Election Commission found Varun Gandhi guilty and has condemned him in the case related to his 'hate speech' during an election rally in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh. The Election Commission asked the BJP not to nominate him as a candidate for the 2009 General Elections. The Election Commission informed the BJP, since the party disowned the comments made, if party nominated him as a candidate then whatever he mentioned in the 'Hate Speech' would be treated as the party's policies.

On 29 March, Varun Gandhi surrendered before the local court in Pilibhit, after his anticipatory bail expired in the presence of a large number of supporters. He was arrested and jailed by UP police.
